International (or World) Motorcycle Day: Celebrating the Passion on Two Wheels on June 21st
Every year, June 21st marks not only the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere (the summer solstice, the longest day of the year), but also World Motorcycle Day. It's the perfect opportunity for motorcyclists around the world to take their bikes out, share their passion, and enjoy the roads under the sun.
Why June 21st?
This date wasn't chosen at random. June 21st coincides with the summer solstice, offering the maximum number of daylight hours for riding. It's an ideal time for long rides, rallies, and getaways, especially in the Northern Hemisphere where the majority of motorcyclists celebrate this event.
The day is part of the vast calendar of "world days" and is shared with other celebrations such as World Music Day, World Giraffe Day, and International Slow Day. (sometimes ironically mentioned by motorcyclists stuck in traffic jams!).
Origin and History of the Day
Unlike some official days created by international institutions, World Motorcycle Day is first and foremost a grassroots, community-based initiative. It emerged in the 2000s, driven by clubs, enthusiasts, and motorcycling communities around the world. Social media and rallies then contributed to its international popularity.
In France, it is sometimes referred to as National Motorcycle and Motorcyclists Day, established around 2014 by the National Center for Road Safety Training (CNFSR), although the events have varied. The global dimension remains centered on June 21st.
The main objective? To celebrate the motorcycle as a symbol of freedom, adventure, camaraderie, and connection with the road, while promoting road safety, mutual respect among road users, and technological advancements (particularly electric and more environmentally friendly motorcycles).
A Little History About the motorcycle itself
The motorcycle has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century:
• 1868-1871: French engineer Louis-Guillaume Perreaux files a patent for a steam-powered velocipede, often considered the ancestor of the modern motorcycle ("the Perreaux").
• 1885: Germans Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach develop the "Reitwagen," the first two-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.- • Late 19th and early 20th centuries: Industrialization with pioneering brands like Werner in France, and later Harley-Davidson, Indian, Royal Enfield, etc.
Since then, the motorcycle has evolved from a utilitarian means of transport to a true lifestyle: from urban scooters to large adventure bikes, including sport bikes and custom motorcycles.
What to do to celebrate this day? - • Go for a ride: A solo or group ride remains the best way to mark the occasion.
• Participate in events: Gatherings, exhibitions, mechanical workshops, and demonstrations. - • Raise awareness: Remind people of the importance of wearing protective gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, boots) and sharing the road.
- • Share online: With the hashtags #WorldMotorcycleDay or #June21Motorcycle.
- It's also a time to think about the future: ecological transition, increased safety, and opening the community to all profiles.
In conclusion: More than a day, a state of mind.
World Motorcycle Day celebrates much more than a vehicle. It pays tribute to a universal passion that transcends cultures, ages, and lifestyles. On a motorcycle, you feel alive, free, connected to the environment and to other riders.
Whether you're a seasoned rider or a future motorcyclist, take advantage of June 21st to hop on your bike (or dream about your next one!) and fully embrace this spirit.
Ride safe, and have a great June 21st! all bikers!
