A TOTAL CHALLENGE FOR BMW: ZXMOTO DISPLAYS A 1000CC BOXER ENGINE WITH CARDAN SHAFT AND AUTOMATIC GEAR CHANGE

Zhang Xue's ambition seems to have no technical constraints. At the CIMA 2026 trade fair in Chongqing, the disruptive Chinese brand ZXMoto caused an international sensation by unveiling the development of a brand-new 1,000cc twin-cylinder boxer engine with shaft drive and automated gear changes, designed to power a maxi-trail motorcycle that will seek to compete directly against the legendary BMW R 1300 GS.

BOXER ENGINE WITH FACE CYLINDERS AND OVER 105 HP
Breaking with the hegemony of inline engines in the Asian industry, ZXMoto has designed a liquid-cooled, horizontally opposed twin-cylinder (boxer) engine with four valves per cylinder. It develops over 105 hp and a generous 100 Nm of torque available from very low revs. This mechanical layout significantly lowers the vehicle's center of gravity, providing natural stability and dynamic balance in corners.

CARDAN DRIVE AND TRANSMISSION AMT
The major engineering surprise is the incorporation of a single-arm cardan shaft final drive, eliminating the chain and the need for lubrication on long journeys. Furthermore, it features an automated manual transmission (AMT) system with an electronic clutch actuator, allowing the rider to drive in fully automatic mode or select gears sequentially using handlebar-mounted triggers.

HIGH-DISTANCE MAXI-TRAIL PROJECT
This engine will serve as the basis for a future adventure maxi-trail featuring semi-active suspension, front collision avoidance radar, an oversized TFT screen, and off-road driving modes specifically designed for intercontinental crossings.

THE AUDACITY OF CHINESE ENGINEERING
ZXMoto proves it's ready to compete in the most prestigious and complex segment of the global motorcycling world, going head-to-head with Bavarian legends.

Do you think a Chinese adventure bike with a boxer engine and shaft drive can appeal to long-time BMW GS riders?
